So far in our Winter Wellness series, we have discussed the importance of nutrition, the delight of engaging your inner child, and ways to tailor your movement specifically for Winter. This week, we are turning our focus to connection. Connecting with like-minded souls and those who care for you can bring laughter and joy to the darkest of days, and is paramount to maintaining your wellness journey through the Winter.
Social connection in the Winter months is particularly important for our mental wellbeing. It can be all too easy to retreat from the world and blame the weather for staying tucked up at home, but staying in touch with friends is essential.
Who are your community? Identify your community; a safe haven of individuals who build you up, inspire and support you. This community could stem from any area of your life. As time has passed, we seem to have lost touch with the importance of maintaining a strong sense of community around us. Scientists have tracked the highest number of centurions to cultures where community remains central to their every day life; where each individual has a purpose, allowing the people to lean on one another rather than striving to fulfil every aspect of wellbeing alone.
In our fast paced, modern society which is increasingly effective at disconnecting us from ourselves as well as each other, how do you swim against the current?
I was at a yoga class recently where our teacher said that, as humans, we need around 7 hugs a day to function optimally in other areas of our life. Do you have 7 hugs a day? Up your physical connection, your face to face, in real time connection. We are innately community and pack species. It can be easy to head home after a long day and speak to friends online or via technology, but this form of communication really does not offer up the same level of benefits which face to face connection does. Turn to your friend and give them a good squeeze. Feeling better? I thought so.
Make the effort, go the extra mile to connect with those around you. Winter truly is a time of restoration, but we do still need that unbounded joy which comes from being part of a community and continuously bonding with like-minded souls. By living in this way, we not only feed our need for connection, but we give ourselves the chance to learn, to be inspired, to open ourselves up to new and wonderful possibilities. The beautiful thing about connecting with others is that, in doing so, you are simultaneously giving and receiving both energy and love.
Next week, and in the last week of our Winter Wellness series, we will be tackling the festive season - for all its delights and wonder, it can be a challenging time of year for many. Check in with us next week for tips and advice on how to stay grounded and calm during the energetic frenzy and familial pressure which often overtakes this pocket of opportunity for time to stop, breathe and be. Until then, and as always, be gentle with yourselves lovely humans.
